Freshman Year

At the Gabelli School of Business, entrepreneurship is the theme from day one.

That’s because all freshmen take a course called The Ground Floor.

Yes, The Ground Floor is where all first-year students get a grasp on business fundamentals. But it’s not taught from a book.

Instead of reading about “what finance is,” “how marketing works,” “what accountants do” and so on, students learn about each business function┬áby applying it to a new company of their own creation.

Working in teams, students generate a business plan for an imaginary venture of their own. In doing so, they come to understand how accounting, marketing, finance, IT, management and other disciplines would come into play in getting it off the ground.

Some of the businesses have actually launched!
